Mobile phones get charged through batteries or through a phone charger. Now if you feel that using batteries is a better option for you because you don't want the hassle of charging you mobile every time, you should keep in mind how much you are going to use the mobile before going in for buying the battery. Here is a look at the typical mobile phone batteries.

Nickel Cadmium Batteries – These batteries are rechargeable and the important thing to keep in mind is to recharge them once you have completely drained their power. Not doing so can give you the memory effect, wherein certain portion of the battery remains uncharged for a certain period because it has a previous charge. The battery simply forgets that the area needs to be recharged.

Nickel Metal Hydride Batteries – These batteries are better than the Nickel Cadmium Batteries to the extent that they last longer, but then again you have to take are no to succumb to the memory effect.

Lithium Ion Batteries – This is the latest in mobile phone batteries and everyone is going in for them. They don't have the memory effect and defiantly last longer than the prior version.

It does not just know which battery to use that's important; you also need to know how to maintain the batteries so that they last longer. Never keep batteries exposed to extreme temperatures. Also ensure that they are fully discharged before recharging and keep them in working condition by discharging and recharging them as and when required. They should not be left out in the open where moisture can affect them and when the battery finally does wear out, dispose it according to the instruction for battery disposal. When charging the battery ensure to use the same manufacturer's charger as this makes your battery to last longer.

The batteries must be kept clean using a cotton swab and alcohol. This keeps the connection between the battery and the portable device better. Ensure that you battery's vibrator is not on when not required because it will consume more of battery power. When not using you mobile phone keep it turned it off to make you battery serve you longer. If you have power saving features in your mobile be sure to use them as this can really help in making you battery serve you for longer.

I've been told that you turn it off to charge it and only after it's ran down to the low battery beeping stage-

I've never done that because I leave my phone on even when charging. I have teenagers and I don't feel comfortable with it being off at any time

I don't have any problems with keeping my battery charged. I charge it every night, with it on.

I also have a car charger. It sounds like you need a new battery, there are duds sometimes in them.

I don't see where turning it off made the battery last any longer either. You can get an extended life if you still have trouble. They also said that doing it like I do might condition the battery to not hold a longer charge and it still goes three days without having to have a charge-

try another battery, if it still does it, Your phone might have a short or something.

Shut your phone off when you charge it. Also, if your phone uses Bluetooth, you can have your phone closed and the headset is doing almost all of the work. I have a Motorola Razr and I get a 75% longer battery life when I do this as opposed to charging it while its on and talking on the phone w/o the headset. Just my humble opinion.
